Welcome to the Anth 137 page! Thank you for your interest in this online course.  The online orientation meeting is scheduled at the main campus library on the first floor on Tuesday, January 19 from  6:00-7:00pm in LL-109. Here is some general information about the Anth 137 online course (section #33840). 

Course Description
This course is a cross-cultural survey of health, illness and healing in small-scale societies as well as modern societies from a cultural, biological, and ecological perspective. Topics covered include perceptions of the body, perceptions of disease, life phases, culture-specific syndromes, healing practices, healers, nutrition, and healing and medical systems. Text Requirements
There are two required texts to purchase:

1) The textbook is still to be determined.

Course Requirements
*To take this online course you need to have regular access to a reliable computer(s) and also have a backup in case problems arise.

This course requires you to come to the main Palomar campus in San Marcos to take three exams during the semester A photo ID, scantron, and a #2 pencil will be needed for each exam. Please note that I cannot make any exceptions to this policy of taking exams on the main campus, and any exceptions to the various dates that exams will be administered. Each exam will be available for four days.  You can select which day to take it; however I recommend taking the exam the first two days it is offered.  The tentative exam dates will be posted in December.  Please return to this site to see the exam dates.

**The tentative Spring 2016 schedule for the STAR Tutoring/Proctoring Center where the exams will be proctored is the following:
Mondays: 9:00am –7:00pm
Tuesdays through Thursdays: 9:00am – 5:00pm
Fridays and Saturdays: 9:00am – noon (12:00pm)

General Course Work
The general course work will consist of the following:  (1) weekly readings from the texts and articles posted on Blackboard, (2) weekly timed online quizzes based on chapter readings and Blackboard articles, (3) regular discussion board forums, (4) approximately six film assignments (mainly watching a film and answering questions on a quiz), and (5) a write-up involving interviewing two or more people about medical perspectives.  If you are not familiar with online classes, I will be explaining how the class works at the orientation meeting on Tuesday, January 19 from 6:00-7:00pm in LL-109.

Tuesday, January 19, 6:00-7:00pm Orientation Meeting (important information)
If you have not taken an online course you *must* attend the orientation meeting.  If you already have taken an online class you do not need to attend the orientation; however you will need to post on the discussion board by Tuesday, January 19 by 1:00pm as a form of required attendance.  If you do not post by the deadline you may be dropped from the class.  If you are at the orientation meeting you will be able to post at that time. You will be receiving an e-mail about the course and information about posting on the discussion board a few days before the semester begins. Please make sure your “preferred” e-mail address in e-Services is correct since emails will be automatically sent to that address.

Adding/Crashing the Course
I will add the first five people on the wait list.  Please send me an email by Monday, January 18 if you still want to add the class.  If you are not on the wait list and want to add the class, please attend the orientation meeting on Tuesday, January 19 at 6:00pm in LL-109.

Accessing the Course
If you are enrolled, you should be able to access this online course on Blackboard by Monday, January 18.   I will send an e-mail notifying you when the course is available.
