A surprising number of faculty members at our institution own iPads. I know, because I recently had the opportunity to present a short iPad Ed workshop which was well attended, and I asked. As I say, a surprising number of hands went up. Part of the workshop was what I intended to be a brief discussion of using Apple TV to wirelessly project in the classroom, but the discussion was not so brief because there was a great deal of interest in the iPad and projection technology. Thus, this post, on the various ways to use the iPad with a classroom projector, both wired and wirelessly. In the...

How does progress happen? That is the initial question that greets users of IBM’s free THINK app for iPad (the app is also available for Android). For those who love technology, science and the history of both, it is the entrée to a fascinating collection of resources put together in an engaging, thought-provoking display. The presentation begins with the 10-minute Think film, which can be downloaded to the iPad (161MB) or streamed (from YouTube—the far better choice if your connection allows it). In using it you will be exposed to images of great (and in some cases not-so-great) art, get to meet some of today’s most interesting artists and designers, and consider just what makes great art great. Though the app has commercial tie-ins to art.com, they are subtle and unobtrusive. It also does not work flawlessly, but works well enough to make it a must have app. Best if all, it’s free. The...

If you use the HD forward facing camera on the iPad (the one pointing away from you when you are looking at the screen) to take videos for use in class, you may need to do just a little editing before uploading the videos to YouTube or emailing them. We checkout Flip and Kodak camcorders for this purpose too, and generally the only type of editing the professor needs to do is to trim the beginning and end of a clip. There is almost always material at the beginning, when you are getting ready to start, that needs to be trimmed off, and sometimes material at the end to, when you realize you are...
