About David

200xDavidSo what’s the deal with this David Gray fella? Well, obviously, I write casually, blog and tweet fairly frequently, post to YouTube, and have been an employee of Palomar College since 1996. (Technically I did volunteer work since ’94, but I’m never sure if that should count.) I read a great deal, mostly for pleasure, and tend towards the Sci-Fi and Fantasy genre, although both of those seem to be tremendous grab bags rather than clarifying. At one time a trip to Barnes & Noble was my idea of a great evening; these days almost all my book purchases are for my Kindle though.

I’m married, have two sons, and live over fifty miles away from my office. So a typical work day for me starts with seeing my boys off on the school bus, then hitting the freeway to get into San Marcos. My regular work shift is Mondays through Thursdays, from 10 AM until 9 PM, so at least I miss most of the worst traffic. On the other hand I do have to combat Palomar’s dreadful parking situation… funny how the staff lots are really overcrowded for the first couple weeks each semester, and after that will typically have room. I’m mystified how many employees only park here at the start of term, and then don’t. Oh well.

I’ve been administering Palomar’s Blackboard course management system/learning management system/learning environment/whatever you call it since late in 1998. When I was brought on-board the product was “CourseInfo” and one of my first acts was to upgrade us from version 2 to 3. Serving as both the server and system admin, as well as trainer and support for faculty using Blackboard, has been the prime focus of my work for so very many years.

My favorite social activity is playing or running tabletop, pen and paper, role playing games. My favorite regular polyhedral die is the d12, though I keep a d7 around for novelty value. Now if only I can find players for a Dresden Files RPG group, I’ll be entertained for months.

My favorite number is 21+13i, favorite color is blue, and my favorite word is “indeed.” And if that isn’t enough trivia, feel free to stop by my office in LL-111B and strike up a conversation.
