Non-Sworn/Part-time Hourly/Student Employee
DEFINITION: The Palomar College Police Department provides a 24-hour Communications Center staffed with Student Police Dispatchers. Under the general supervision of the Dispatch Coordinator, the Dispatchers receive and transmit routine and emergency telephone and radio calls, dispatch required equipment and personnel, perform clerical work, operate complex teletype and video terminals for automated information retrieval. Inventory and check out equipment and keys, and monitor multiple radio systems.
- Receive emergency and routine request for services from the public and the campus community via telephone, obtaining essential information, recording that information, and disseminating the information according to established policies and procedures for the Communications Center.
- Dispatch appropriate emergency vehicles, equipment, and personnel in responses to requests for service, via police radio system.
- Operate secure data terminals with classified and confidential information pursuant to Policy and Procedures and Government Statutes.
- Monitor campus surveillance systems.
- Maintain written logs, files, and computer information in the prescribed manner.
- Update computer tracking sheets, logs, and files. Perform clerical functions and projects as directed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
- Read, write, spell, and speak in a clear, concise voice. Read and interpret maps.
- Learn correct telephone answering techniques, customer service, and policies and procedures.
- Operate computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system with sufficient speed and accuracy to document field activity and create calls for service.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and accurately using police radio and telephone equipment.
- Maintain composure and work accurately in emergency situations.
- Handle multiple tasks, prioritizing and organizing workload.
- Work in a confined area; sit for long periods of time, wearing a headset.
- Work in a highly structured and confidential environment.
- View multiple video terminals for extended periods of time.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills, Microsoft Office Programs, basic understanding of Internet searches.
- Conduct oneself with a high standard of customer service, professional conduct, moral and work ethic.
- Be a team player willing to work well with others to achieve a common goal of a safe campus community environment.
- Work under minimum supervision.
- Applicant must be enrolled in 12 or more units at Palomar College during the Spring and Fall Semesters and 6 or more units during the Summer Semester. This does not apply to part-time hourly employees.
- Candidates must successfully pass a background investigation.
- Candidates must be willing to work non-traditional shifts including weekends, nights, and graveyards. School class schedules will be taken under consideration. The minimum work hours will be three, eight hour shifts.
- Must be willing to follow ad adhere to Police Department Policies and Procedures.
