Healthy Tip of the Week:

Do you know how many steps you are taking each day?  Do you know how many steps you are supposed to be taking?

You may have heard you should be taking 10,000 steps/day.  This is a great goal and one we should always strive for!

The Walking Site reminds us of easy ways we can increase our steps:

  • Take a walk with your spouse, child, or friend
  • Walk the dog
  • Use the stairs instead of the elevator
  • Park farther from the store
  • Better yet, walk to the store
  • Get up to change the channel
  • Window shop
  • Plan a walking meeting
  • Walk over to visit a neighbor
  • Get outside to walk around the garden or do a little weeding

Biggest Loser – Week 1 Results!

Week 1

We are off to a good start!  This week we lost a combined total of 115.5 pounds!  Thank you to everyone who has signed up and taken the time to weigh-in.  Remember, you do not do your team a favor by missing a weigh-in.  Your weight will revert to your initial number.  So, if you have lost 4 pounds and have an off week and don’t want to weigh-in, don’t give in to it!  Even if you have gone up a couple of pounds, you’d still be in better shape than being dropped back down to your starting weight. Accountability is part of what makes a weight loss program work. There will be great weeks and not-so-great weeks. Learn from them and move forward. Please try to weigh-in during the scheduled times on Thursdays (12:30-4:30 pm).  If you cannot make it then, please arrange a make up time with Terri Wallace x 2250 or Julie Robinson x 3713.

Biggest Loser! Let’s do this!

We are so excited to see all the returning and new participants to our annual Biggest Loser weight loss challenge.  Here is some information for a successful experience in this weight loss challenge:

Weigh-in Times:

All weigh-ins will be held on Thursdays in the HS building, room 202 from 12:30-4:30 pm.  The nursing department will be working collaboratively with Team Life this year to provide the weigh-ins and results analysis. For make-up appointments, call Julie Robinson at ext. 3713 or Terri Wallace at ext. 2250.  The initial weigh-in will take place on Thursday, February 23rd and the final weigh-in will take place on Thursday, May 4th.

What information will you receive each week?

Each week we will post the weekly results based on the average percentage weight loss of your team.  We will also highlight the top individual losers based on percentage of weight loss.

We will also share with you tips for healthy activities that can help you achieve your weight loss goals.

What are the rewards for winners?

There will be cash awards for top male/female winners + additional team prizes.  Stay tuned for an update on the team awards!

Tips to help you succeed on this behavior change challenge:

  • Work with your team members!  Having a weight loss buddy is incredibly helpful for keeping you accountable to your weight loss goals.
  • Use apps such as MyFitnessPal to track your calories and activity.
  • Set Specific Realistic Measurable weekly goals that you hope to achieve to reach your final goal AND record your progress!

Biggest loser Spring 2017 Sign Ups

We hope you will join us for our annual Biggest Loser challenge!  To sign-up for the challenge you can complete the following form, or you can sign-up in person at the employee Health fair on Wednesday February 22nd, 2017, from 11am-1pm.

We have lost a lot of weight in this challenge!  Since the first challenge in the Spring of 2008 we have lost a total of 2,320 lbs!

  • Spring 2008 (56 participants)= 442 lbs lost
  • Fall 2008 (36 participants)= 208 lbs lost
  • Spring 2009 (52 participants)= 243 lbs lost
  • Spring 2010 (48 particpants)= 248 lbs lost
  • Spring 2011 (48 participants)= 241 lbs lost
  • Spring 2012 (22 participants)= 152 lbs lost
  • Fall 2012 (32 participants)= 271 lbs lost
  • Spring 2013 (18 participants) = 116 lbs lost
  • Spring 2014 (33 participants)= 215lbs
  • Fall 2014 (41 participants)= 93lbs
  • Spring 2015 (31 participants)= 83.2lbs
  • Spring 2016 (30 participants) = 256.6 lbs

Moving the start time of our Couch to 5K workout to 7:15 a.m.!

We’re making it even easier to get ready for the Turkey Trot!  As the workout only takes between 30-38 minutes, we’ve pushed the start time to 7:15 a.m. and you’ll still be finished before 8:00 a.m.!

As a reminder, we’re doing the Couch to 5K workout program – (walking and jogging in intervals – increasing the running as we lead up to the 5K). Join us on the track from 7:15-8:00 a.m. on Tuesdays & Thursdays to do two of the three weekly workouts together. You’ll do the third on your own over the weekend. We’ll keep training through Thanksgiving and end with the Turkey Trot that morning. If the Fallbrook location doesn’t work for you…no worries. Prepare for the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot with the Couch to 5K Training!

Prepare for 5Ks by joining Kelly and Suzanne in the Couch to 5K workout program for eight weeks prior to the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot. Start by downloading the app – you can find one for any phone. Then, join us on the track from 7-8 a.m. on Tuesdays & Thursdays (beginning 9/27) to do two of the three weekly workouts together. Fallbrook Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot    

 

Great time at the 5K SCADaddle for Research!

We had 25 Palomar faculty, staff, family and friends participate in the 5K West Coast SCADaddle for Research on Saturday, September 10th. We began at the North Hubbs Trail of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon and finished at the Discovery Center. It was a beautiful day and we were so happy to be there and support Marti and SCAD Research.
