Introduction to Ushering

  • Check off Students names on the Usher Sign up sheet as they arrive to the Performance.
  • Hand out Usher Badges.
  • Introduce yourself and Box Office Staff to all ushers.

  • Take Ushers through a brief introduction of the House.
  • What the Performance is( the title of the show)
  • The time length of the performance(“ the performance is running 1 hour and 45 min. with a 15 min. intermission”)
  • What area the performance is from ( i.e. Dance, Theatre, Music)
  • How the seating is arranged.
  • Explain which doors they should suggest for Patrons to use for their connivance
  • Explain that in the case of a medical emergency, ushers need to contact the House Manager, and to leave the effected person alone (DO NOT MOVE THEM!)

  • In case of a Major Emergency (i.e. Earthquake, or Fire) the House Management will contact the lighting operator to bring up the lights and this will allow the house staff to safely evacuate the audience.
  • At Intermission the Ushers will need to take the edge of the stage, this is to make sure that audience members DO NOT try to enter the stage area.
  • During the performance ushers need to take the seat on each side of the audience. If there are late seating patrons please ask them to take a seat at the edge of the isle and they can then take their actual seat at the intermission. Please note late seating will be accommodated at the desecration of the house management.
    • Front Door, at the door you will be taking tickets and telling patrons which theatre door they should enter to get to their seats.
    • Performance Entrance/ Programs, at these areas you will be handing out programs and helping patrons to their seats.
    • Will Call Station, You will be located next to the ticketing area; at this station you will be handling all the Will Call tickets, these are tickets that were purchased prior to the event.
  • Ask if ushers have any questions and try to answer them as well as you can. Once the Questions are over, decide who will be taking which position and where they will be located during the performance. The position are as followed

  • After the Performance, usher will be asked to stand once again at the edge of the stage. As patrons ask for performers, ushers need to ask them to go to the meeting area, and wait for them there. Ushers also need to make sure that audience members do not try and enter the stage from the house.
  • Once the house is clear ushers need to help pick-up the audience area and return all programs that are in good condition.  Once these tasks are complete, Ushers are free to go. PLEASE make sure that all usher badges are returned to the house manager or any of the house staff.  Please sign any programs students need to return to their class.
