THIS WEEK IN THE ASG: Senator voting debated

A subcommittee of Palomar’s student government weighed in April 11 on whether students should vote on how its senators are elected.

Students from the Associated Student Government criticized an activist group for skipping over them and taking the issue right to Palomar’s Governing Board.

The ASG’s Policies, Procedures and Executive Review Committee members discussed the initiative from The Coalition for Democratic Education to break the ASG from the Office of Student Affairs, allow members to select their own adviser and hold annual elections for ASG senators rather than board appointment.

“I find it disrespectful that you did not show up at the Policies and Procedures meeting when the ASG made an attempt to listen to your complaints and write the resolution recommended by the Policies and Procedures and Committee,” ASG President Evelyn Lucero said to a Coalition member at the meeting.

Coalition member Nestor Venegas shot back that he was following a ruling by a Superior Court judge in Vista that the Governing Board should be the one to make the call.

“We didn’t show up at the (policies and procedures) meeting because when we went to the court, the judge told us that this is something that (the ASG) would not be able to resolve. He gave us (instructions and) steps to follow in order to get our goals accomplished,” Venegas said.

The Governing Board did not make any decisions on the matter during its April 10 meeting but will continue to discuss the issue.

The ASG committee will follow suit.

“We decided to draft a resolution to the Coalition’s complaints at the last policies and procedures meeting,” Vice President Cody Dean said at the commencement of the discussion portion of the motion to approve the action item.
