Celebrate the planet for Earth Day

Come and join the Earth Day celebration on the campus at Palomar. Hosted by the Inter Club Council at 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on April 22 in the Student Union. Earth Day will be represented by several campus clubs with information and lots of fun and games. You can even have your face painted.

Celebrations such as the planting of trees, rallies, neighborhood clean-ups, and handing out educational information are examples of the commemorative acts held each year on Earth Day all around the world.

In 1970 there was an increased interest in gathering national support for environmental awareness. An activist from San Francisco, John McConnell and Senator Gaylord Nelson from Michigan began working separately on this same cause. Millions of citizens came together on April 22 to voice their concerns and have continued to do so every year.

This year, according to the website, www.earthday.org, to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Earth Day, the Earth Day Network’s President, Kathleen Rogers and the Global Poverty Project’s CEO, Hugh Evans, have combined their efforts and are coming together in an attempt to solve climate change and end extreme poverty.

This combination of efforts became Global Citizen 2015 Earth Day and took place on April 18 on the Washington Monument Grounds in Washington, D.C.. Several well-known celebrities such as Usher, and Mary J. Blige were there to help entertain and rally with thousands of people on the Washington Mall.

Rogers and Evan’s goal is to mobilize and educate global citizens regarding environmental issues and world hunger. Coincidentally, the rally was scheduled to be held during the same time the meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund were being conducted.

The Earth Day Network has also been reported by USA Today to have teamed up with the creators of the Angry Birds game. A new game, which addresses environmental issues, is called Champions for Earth and will be available for downloading in September.
