TEXTBOOKS

The Norton Reader, Shorter 11th Edition, by Eastman et al. (or other editions)

COURSE OBJECTIVES

English 100 is a course designed to help the student develop reading and writing skills and to demonstrate clear thinking, good organization, and accurate expression.  Assignments will develop essay competence as well as the ability to do library research and write a term paper.  Content, structure, and the correct use of standard written English will be stressed throughout the course.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Several essays to teach or lead the discussion for, 4 essays with several rough drafts, 1 annotated bibliography, 1 term paper (counts as 2 grades), evaluation of other students' papers.  Attendance and tardiness as well as class participation will count toward a subjective grade equal in weight to 2 essays.

POLICIES

IF THE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY IS NOT TURNED IN AT THE TIME OF THE CONFERENCE--COMPLETE AND IN CORRECT FORM--THE TERM PAPER WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.  The Student must personally attend the conference.

PLAGIARISM IS A SERIOUS OFFENSE.  ANY STUDENT FOUND CHEATING IN THIS WAY WILL AUTOMATICALLY RECEIVE AN "F."

                                    4 essays                        4

                                    1 term paper                 2

                                    1 subjective grade       2

                                    1 Final Exam                2

                                                TOTAL            10 grades averaged equally

The subjective grade is based on the total points earned, on a curve with the highest total equaling 100%.  Assignments include term paper assignments, taught essays, rough drafts, evaluations of others' work, work on the class journal, quizzes or assignments not listed on the syllabus.  Annotated bibliography does not get a grade but does earn 25 points. Absences or tardies, especially when it affects other students can count negative points.

You can check out your Subjective grade points here; this will change each week.
