Red Fox Vulpes fulva

This is the most widely distributed fox in North America and smaller than either the coyote or wolf which are also found throughout the GYE. The Red Fox occurs in several color variations including a black and "cross" phase where a dark cross-shaped area appears over the shoulder area. Like this one found foraging early one morning in the wet vegetation near Tower Falls, foxes are most active at night and during early morning and late evening hours.
