How can I earn extra credit?

A maximum of 25 points of extra credit per student may be accumulated.

1.  (worth up to 20 points)  Look up the name "Leonard Peltier" on the internet.  Visit at least five sites which support and five sites which oppose Peltier.  Record the location (url) for each site you visit.  Then, write a letter to one of your Congressional Representatives, expressing your position. Make a copy of the letter, sign the original and put it in a stamped, addressed envelope.  Attach the copy and the list of urls to the envelope with a paperclip.  (Click this link for delivery options.)  I will seal and mail the envelope and return the copy to you with a point score written on it.

2.  (worth up to 5 points each; maximum twenty points) Send me an original photo as a .jpg file which will illustrate the material we have covered in class.   Do not give me a floppy disk or CD.  For each photo I use, you earn 5 points. Send me an email, with the digital photos attached, containing the following information.  List each photo separately and title each image.  Let me know where you took the photos and how you obtained permission to photograph.  Before going to all of the trouble of scanning and sending, you can always ask me to comment on your suggestion.  I don't need, for example, pictures of grinding rocks.  I am looking for native animal pictures and landscape pictures, too, which capture the feel of different geographies and cultural and archaeological sites.

3.  We have planted a native garden near the AIS office.  You can earn extra credit by watering the plants and by maintaining the area.  Each fifteen minutes of labor is worth 2 extra credit points.  We also need laminated NO SMOKING signs installed.  We need more rocks of various sorts.  See  me for details.

4.  Find a food indigenous to the region you are studying.  Make some of the food.  Bring it to the final exam for everyone to taste.  To earn  up to 20 points:  1) bring a label on which is recorded: a) your heading, b)  the name of the food, c) a brief history of the food, and d) the recipe you used.  2)  provide any necessary serving equipment, ie. napkins, cups, and 3)  remove all evidence of your project at the end of class. This option is usually only for classroom students.  However, sometimes online students have organized a Native feast.

5.  Go to the NEWS link on my homepage.  Find the Mystery Icons and record their locations.   When you have found them all turn in the locations to receive 2 points per icon.
