The truth of the matter is that:

A is a kerfed box.

B is a memorial pole.

C is a rattle.

None of these things is itself a totem, but each is covered with totems.  A totem is a symbol of a special relationship usually between a social group like a family or club and a natural phenomenon like lightning, or a plant like a cedar tree, or an animal like a bear.
