After taking some time off to get married and raise three children, Karen returned to education for a second chapter in her educational career—this time to pursue and complete a Masters of Arts Degree in Rhetoric and Public Address at California State University East Bay. Upon completion of her degree, Karen remained at CSUEB as a full-time lecturer; teaching responsibilities included courses in Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Nonverbal Communication, Small Group Discussion, Public Speaking for Non-native Speakers of English, and the Power of the Human Voice. Additional activities during her tenure at CSUEB included co-directing the “Conference in Rhetorical Criticism” and co-editing its Conference Journal, advising Speech majors, editing the Department newsletter, and advising Cooperative Education students. At CSUEB, she also created and directed the Speech Department’s Communication Laboratory that served the campus community. Campus activities included directing seminars in Voice and Speech Improvement for Teacher Education and Theatre Arts, serving as Lecturer Representative to the Academic Senate, and participating in the University Mentoring Program. Karen also taught off-campus courses for employees with limited English proficiency at companies that included Apple Computers, General Electric and Everex Corporation while at CSUEB.
Karen and her husband took early retirement and moved to Southern California to be closer to two of their three children, but after acute “boredom” set in, Karen embarked on the third chapter of her teaching career here at Palomar College where she teaches Oral Communication as an adjunct instructor.
