GCIP 140A - Digital Imaging/Photoshop 1A grading requirements:

Project 1 - Selection and Layer Composite (50 pts. possible)
Students are divided into groups and sent out to take digital photographs of varous images around campus (arcitexture, plants, scenery, people, buildings, etc.). Each individual will then use selection techniques learned in class to create a layered composite.

Read Introduction and the chapters on Selections, Basic Photo Corrections and Layer Basics in the textbook. Finished art will be an 8”x10” or 10”x8” @ 360 ppi (pixel per inch) RGB file.

Create a new file and bring in various selections from the digital photographs you shot around campus.

Make sure that you use all of the various selection tools (rectangular & elliptical marquees, regular, polygonal, & magnetic lassos, magic wand & quick select) such that once you have completed the project you are proficient with each of the tools.

To make the project easier to grade and to make sure that you can accurately describe how you completed the project, name each layer based on the selection tool(s) that were used to make that layer.

As you work, practice till you become proficient with these tools & commands:
Duplicating (command + option + drag)
Zooming (space + command [+ option to zoom out] + click)
Panning around the file (hold spacebar for the hand tool, then click and drag)
Adding to, subtracting from, or intersecting a selection (shift or option while using tool after a selection has already been made)
Constraining (shift)
Maximizing the view (command zero)
Make selections with a sharp edge, anti-aliased and/or a feathered edge
Vary the opacity of different layers

The goal is to become more familiar with Photoshop while having some fun using various selections to create and design a collage of images. Save all turned in work in Photoshop format with layers. Naming scheme should follow this format: BealoM Proj1.psd where BealoM is your last name and 1st initial.

Grading for Selection Composite:
Successfully used all selection tools in creating a composite of various images shot on digital camera(s) = 45-50 pts.
Used most but not all selection tools... = 35-45 pts.
Used 3 or less selection tools... = < 35 pts.

Project 2 - Digital Painting (100 pts. possible) Grade based on the following:
Proper dimentions: 20 pts.
Uses Mixer brushes to approximate the look of the original artwork: 65 pts.
Uses appropriate number of layers to keep the art editable: 15 pts.
