The first midterm will consist of three parts. For Part One, you will be shown ten slides. I will ask you to write down one bit of information about each slide. Typically, I'll ask for artist, title, period/style, or culture. Part Two will consist of true/false and matching questions. For Part Three, you will be given three essay topics. You will pick one and write a short essay.
For the actual midterm, be sure to bring a #2 pencil and scantron #886-E to class.
Directions: For the midterm in class, you will be shown TEN slides. Each slide will be on the screen for THIRTY SECONDS.
(Here, I've included ten images, all from your textbook, and all works of art that we've gone over in class. For each image, I ask for one bit of information. This is the same TYPE of information I'll ask on exam day. ONE of these images will also be shown during the actual midterm, although you will not get the same question I'm asking of you here. Click on an image below to see the work of art, and try to answer the question within 30 seconds. Click on "answer" for the correct response.)
Directions: Choose the best answer for each question.
(Again, these are the same TYPES of questions you'll get on the midterm. These exact questions will not be on the test. Click on "answer" for the correct response. I've only included 5 questions here, but you'll have 20 questions on the actual test.)
1. All of the following are characteristics of Renoir's work except:
2. Which Impressionist artist painted many scenes of ballerinas?
3. What is the name of the famous sculpture by Bernini in the Cornaro family chapel that shows a saint who has just been pierced by an angel's arrow?
4. Rembrandt's late style of painting is darker and quieter than his early style. True or false?
5. Who created paintings and etchings based on the French occupation of his country in the early nineteenth-century?
Directions: Pick ONE of the following essay topics to write about. At the beginning of your essay, WRITE DOWN THE NUMBER OF THE ESSAY YOU HAVE PICKED (1, 2, or 3). Your essay should be well organized and written in complete sentences.
(These are the same TYPES of essay questions you'll see on the exam. None of these questions will appear on the exam.)
1. Compare and contrast Diego Velázquez's Maids of Honor (Las Meninas) with Francisco de Goya's Family of Charles IV. Which artist influenced the other? What traits do the two works share? How are they different? Be specific in your examples.
2. During the Baroque period, many changes were made to St. Peter's in Rome. What were these additions to the church (both interior and exterior) and its piazza? Who made these additions? In what way do these changes affect our relationship with the structure? For what religious reasons were these changes made?
3. Using at least one work of art as an example, describe who the Pre-Raphaelites were. Who were the founders? What were their aims in art? What were they reacting against? What did they embrace, in terms of subject matter and style?
