AIS 120: INDIANS OF THE AMERICAS

Written Assignments:

1. Case Study: This is a 5-7 page paper on one particular Native American group. A Native American group can be a tribe, nation, community, or confederacy. Use our lectures notes Case Study examples as a guide. The outline for the case study should include:

Origins What are the origins of this group? Use language affiliation for clues. Did they originate in the area that they are living ?
Traditional Culture Determine the best time of pre-contact or when we know the most about that culture. Traditional cultures change and you can determine the time frame of the culture you describe. Use our case studies as a guide for culture traits such as economics, social organization, world view.
Contemporary What direct contact did your group have with Europeans or other non-Native Americans? Did they move and what is their status today, e.g. land or population? What is the nature of their culture today? Have they remained fairly traditional or have they been assimilated?

  You will submit a preliminary  1 page Case Study Proposal.  Copy and paste this one page form. Submit it through e-mail as an MS word document.

Your  5-7 page paper, as with all college papers,  will be double spaced and include references. You may include any citation format, including the more basic Turbin. You can e-mail for any help or come by during office hours.

2. Innovation Paper: This is a 2-3 page paper in which you select a Native American innovation. It is recommended that you pick an innovation from the group you choose for your case study since you will already have identified sources that may help. Identify the innovation's traditional context and the contribution it made to the rest of the world. Include references, even if some are the same as your case study.

3. Discussion Board is required and is worth 20 points with 5 pts for participation in each forum. These are meant to help with the tests.
