#14 "Blowin' In The Wind" Lyrics and Melody: Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan (Robert Zimmerman) (1941-   )  first sang "Blowin' In The Wind" at Gerde's Folk City , Greenwich Village, NY in 1962. Dylan had come from Minnesota in 1961 in search of the dying Woody Guthrie, who had Huntington's Disease and was in a New Jersey hospital. On a visit to Woody in the hospital he also met Ramblin' Jack Elliot an old friend of Woody and would channel many of Guthrie's and other earlier folk songs to Dylan. The 'Folk Movement' was making in roads into the college crowd as the Baby Boomers were beginning to get involved with protest on college campuses. In 1962-63 Dylan recorded "Blowin' In The Wind" on his second album "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan". Peter, Paul and Mary (a more commercial folk group) released their version of Dylan's "Blowin' In The Wind" at the same time and made the song more famous. As the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War grew, "Blowin' In The Wind" became an antiwar anthem of the 1960s thru today's Iraq War.

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
Yes, 'n' how many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head,
Pretending he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
