Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I am interested in Welding, I have never taken classes at Palomar before, where do I start?
A: First you must Apply/Register as a student with the college. Then we recommend ALL students start with WELD 100.
Q: I registered as a student and it says all the Welding classes are full, what do I do?
A: The Welding program is severely impacted due to only having capacity for 22 students. We recommend that you show up the first day and try to “crash” the course. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn’t. It all depends on if students show up or not. Please be aware that just because you show up to crash, you are not guaranteed entry into the course. Instructors will drop enrolled students that are “no shows” to make room for waitlisted students, then crashers, but it is not guaranteed.
Q: I have Welding experience and I am only interested in learning 1 process. Do I really need to take WELD 100?
A: Yes, we have had students with 10-30 years of experience tell us they learned a lot from WELD 100 and taking the course is a great way to start your new educational goals.
Q: I want to get certified, how do I test?
A: Currently we only do welding qualification tests once per year during our WELD 140 course in the summer. We currently offer testing in accordance with AWS D1.1 standards.
Q: What class(es) should I take during or after WELD 100?
A: This answer is specific to which industry you plan to enter. We recommend students take our pipe class (145) and qualification class (140) after they have completed many of our courses. Students are not allowed to repeat courses, therefore if they take these courses without being prepared, there is no chance to take it again.
Q: Can I/We come see the facility?
A: Due to safety standards, we do not allow people in our laboratory that are not currently enrolled in our classes. If you would like to see the facility please see the pictures posted. The only exception is through Official College scheduled tours.
Q: When I go into the course schedule I never see any welding classes, when are courses offered?
A: Typically this is just an easy search error. There is a check box at the bottom of the class search page that automatically checks “show open classes only” make sure you uncheck that box as our classes all fill the day registration opens.
