Sad and Majestic Flight

by Joel Groomer

I flew a ship around the stars one night,

wondering what the darkness there would hold.

And on the journey, this majestic flight,

traveling in the vacuum's chilling cold,

I stumbled on a species strong and grand.

They lived within a world of mighty minds,

and rich with life, resources, and with land

all of which they had learned that they could bind.

Yet as I watched them grow in strength and pow'r,

I saw them grow, too, in machines of war.

And in a cloud of gas, a deadly show'r,

they fought amongst themselves; they were no more.

The smoke now clears—I see a barren place,

and shed a tear for the lost human race.
