How To Bake A Poem

by Patti Whitman

Pluck a feeling off the shelf,

something simple but fresh.

Examine it closely

much as a new bride turns her hand

this way and that

to let her diamond catch the sun.

Make certain your idea is solid

with no pithy center to spoil the taste.

Measure out an ample portion of emotion,

tamping it down firmly

to distill the flavor.

Sift together a metaphor

with a spoon of abstraction.

Precisely, like a typesetter,

carefully place each word,

stirring evenly to ensure

consistency of texture.

Add a dollop of whimsy and a dash of the absurd

to prevent too heavy a concoction.

Let settle,

overnight if possible,

to allow air bubbles to form and then escape.

Bake only until mixture sets,

being careful not to overcook.

Best served warm with a reflective mood.
