Mother and child
Jon Aretakis

She sits on the grass
alone
Legs bent
Ankles Crossed
Still and quiet
Her forearms on her knees
eyes bloodshot
A tear from her eye
drips to the grass
Below
She Stares through the shiny flat stone
A loving mother
Reads the stone
Flowers lay on her mother’s mark
She wonders why
If Mother had not died
Giving birth
Her birth
Heart failure
They say
Theirs
A mother and daughter
Separated at birth
She the child
All grown
And pregnant
She wanders
