The
Tale of the Queen of Endor
by Clayton Beach
|
|
When
she dares slip that golden obligation
from one slender finger, tossing it
aside like tonight’s rumpled negligee,
she floats freely through the room
nude, like some svelte, pale specter
and she’s yours, for the moment
so you soar. But when you come
back to the earth and it’s all done;
when you’ve had your fill, and lie
sated, drunk with sleep and
the wine of her love still clings sweetly
to your lips, but he calls, and she answers,
then the barbs in that lilting voice sting
like nettles and all levity vanishes.
Your limbs, that just felt limp
with winged bliss, now turn heavy and dead
and the lead shackles that tie you
down on that cold, damp bed
are the price you pay to be with her.
