The
Tale of the Queen of Endor
by Clayton Beach

The
green grass sways
in the gentle breeze of late spring and plays
softly about my head. I can feel it beneath me as I lie here,
all around me, cool upon my skin. I have not a care
in the world. The long blades form an animated frame
that dances
around the clear blue sky, a bare
canvas that waits to be
filled.
I watch a ladybug, one with the
little black dots
on its back, as it scuttles up a
verdant blade near my arm.
They are always here. I hope I have not
accidentally
crushed
one
in my trespasses.
This one reaches the tip,
crawls around the underside,
then back to the top again. It pauses,
as though briefly stumped, while the world holds
its breath. Suddenly, it
opens up
and its little
black wings like
delicate lace
carry it out of sight
to another
corner of paradise.
If I were a ladybug,
the ribbons of grass could be my highways. I would be free to fly
from one to another if I wished. I could make this place my home
I would stay forever
But now the memory fades from view,
for as I stand at this distance
and gaze upon the spot where I once lay,
before me all I see
isrowsofhousesbunchedtightlytogether
and tidy lawns mowed
short
and l o n g s t r e t c h e s of
cold hard pavement.
And what ladybug could survive
