The
Tale of the Queen of Endor by Clayton Beach |
There’s
a line outside the Social Security office on Fourth, people waiting on the sidewalk in the sun— mothers with purpose, carrying tired sons and daughters, men with canes and paperwork, carrying impatience in their shoulders, and even though I told her I’d drive because she was already two Bloody Marys into the morning before she’d even started at Don Ernesto’s, I’m sitting in the backseat of my boyfriend’s mom’s Pontiac. From the backseat I watch Then a high school, calm on the outside Finally, the house she shares with her fiancé But no Acapulco. |
