My journey here at Palomar College began as a student right after high school.  Once I completed my GE and first Child Development course, I transferred to Humboldt State University and earned my BA in Child Development.  After returning to the San Diego area, I earned my MS from National University.

I have been working in the field of Child Development since 1986.  Over the years, I have worked in just about every setting, from a licensed family child care, a before and after school program, Head Start, a private for-profit center, and a state funded center.   I have had just about every position available in the field from aide to director.

I began my work career at Palomar College in January of 1995 as a teacher of the 2-3 year olds at the Child Development Center (as it was called back then) on campus.  While at the Center, I was a teacher, site supervisor, and coordinator.  While at the same time, I began teaching as part-time in the Child Development Department in 1996 and became full-time in 2000.  I have also served as Department Chair.  One of the best parts of my job is not only to teach Child Development classes, but to also be the ECE Lab School Liaison.  I have been the Liaison since 2003.  I am the link between the Center and the administration on campus.

On a more personal note, I met my husband while taking a communications class here at Palomar.  We were married in 1995 and have a wonderful teenage son, who is always challenging me to use my education and experience.  I was born and raised in Escondido and live there with my family.  When I have some free time, I enjoy photography, needle work, gardening, and doing anything hands-on.  Even as the years go on, each and every day I am thankful for all that Palomar College has given to me.

My name is Tamara Holthaus and I am the Early Childhood Education Lab School Coordinator. I have been an early childhood professional for forty years, twenty years as a teacher, and twenty years as an administrator.  I am also an instructor at Mira Costa, where I teach night classes for the Child Development Department.  I have three adult children, and we are all happy residents of Oceanside, California.

I have a passion for this field and believe that all young children should have access to a high quality program.  Our program demonstrates high quality in every way and in every classroom.  I feel very privileged to be part of the ECE Lab School team; it is an honor to work in a program with such high standards.  I would like every parent to know it is my goal for all Lab School children in our program to develop a lifelong love for learning.  This can only be achieved by providing children positive guidance and meaningful learning experiences.  It is our mission to strive to meet the needs of every child and family in our program.

Hello, my name is Yi-Cheng Hu (pronounced E-Chen).  I was born in Taiwan and moved to Honolulu, Hawaii when I was in the seventh grade.  After completing my B.A. in Psychology, I decided to pursue a career in Early Childhood Education and started teaching preschool in 1999.  I have worked with all age groups, from infants to pre-kindergarteners, and found each stage of development to be unique and special.  While I worked in the field, I was able to complete a M.A. in Human Development and obtain a Program Director permit in Child Development from the California Department of Education.   I  worked as an ECE instructional Specialist at a campus based lab school for over 14 years before I arrived at Palomar.  Besides being a teacher in the classroom, I was responsible for training and mentoring college students who worked in my classroom.  I am excited to be a part of the ECE Lab School team, and am eager to grow and learn with my new family.

I believe in life-long learning and continue to pursuit professional development opportunities whenever possible.  When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with family members and friends, being an amateur foodie, and volunteering at my daughter’s school and extracurricular activities.
