Welcome to Al Trujillo’s Home Page

Greetings! I’m Al Trujillo, Professor Emeritus of Oceanography at Palomar College. I retired in May 2020 after 30 years of teaching at Palomar. I am also the lead author of Essentials of Oceanography, the world’s best-selling college-level oceanography textbook. In addition, I work as a naturalist for Lindblad Expeditions/National Geographic and have worked aboard expedition vessels since 1991 in Southeast Alaska, Baja California, Iceland, and Antarctica (pictured above…and yes, those are real penguins in the background!). In 2018, I began working for Holland America Line as a guest presenter, naturalist, and geological oceanographer on board the Maasdam and Zaandam in far-flung places of the world including Oceania and the tropical South Pacific (Fiji, Tonga, French Polynesia, Easter Island, and the Marquesas), South America (Patagonia, Falkland Island, and the Chilean Fjords), Southeast Alaska, and the North Pacific (Aleutians, Kamchatka, and Japan).
