The Dapper Bandits serve as a testament to the value of education. They’re a shining example of what happens when so many talented minds converge in a single place. The Dapper Bandits formed in 2015 when its founding members, Vafa Samiei and Koosha Hakimi asked fellow Palomar student bassist Shannon Nauss if he was interested in playing some tunes with them. Blown away by the quality of the music, Shannon didn’t hesitate to say yes. From here they played their early shows, beginning with “The Coyote Music Festival” in El Cajon and finishing off with writing original music for the Palomar theater dept’s production of “The Good Person of Szechwan.” Following this, the band decided they needed something to really cement the vision of this complex music. That’s when they met saxophonist Danny Gonzalez, who’s lyricism and intuitive melodic sensibilities tightened the sound into something more focused and clear. It was at this point that the band really hit their stride and found themselves to be a defining band in the local music scene. They continued playing shows and have since played varied venues like The Loft at UCSD, The Music Box and even out of State for Arizona’s annual Grand Canyon Bahai conference.
While the band may have formed in the practice rooms of the Palomar College music dept, the sound formed much earlier in Vafa and Koosha’s hometown of Shiraz, Iran. The two being cousins, have a close musical language that stems back to childhood. Fusing traditional Persian folk and pop music, with jazz and even math rock, The Dapper Bandits bring something truly unique to the San Diego music scene. With a tight focused rhythm section, the band balances complex time signatures with a thoughtful Persian inspired melodicism that combine to create a band you’re going to want to hear. This is only the beginning for this music as the pandemic has given them a chance to focus and hone their songwriting skills, and hopefully record their first record soon. Keep an eye out as they continue to venture out in the San Diego music scene and beyond as they plan for a possible small tour soon.
