Palomar Choral Music Series
November 8, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm PST| $10 – $25
Abstract for Palomar Choral Music Series 1
The Palomar College Chamber Singers and Palomar Chorale invite you to join us for the release of two virtual choir performances, with introductions by Palomar’s Director of Choral and Vocal Studies, John K. Russell. Dr. Russell will talk about the process of creating choral music in the virtual environment, how the choirs at Palomar are adapting to singing remotely, and speak about each of the works chosen for this performance.
Statement About Choral Ensemble Course Content from Dr. Russell
This semester we will focus on less repertoire than a typical semester. However, we will take more time and uncover more detail in the content that we do study, rehearse, and ultimately sing. The repertoire selected for this semester and the spring semester will focus on composers who are historically underrepresented by most performing ensembles. We will sing and study music by women and people of color, and commit to making that a goal for the Palomar choirs. This commitment to inclusion will balance out the systemic racism and gender bias that exists in classical music. In the words of Grant Gershon, the Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Master Chorale: “The Master Chorale’s role and vision for its future is to lift up a multiplicity of voices in order to present the most vibrant mix of choral music imaginable.” I stand behind this way of thinking and commit to bringing that philosophy to the choirs at Palomar College.
