English 100 Catalog Description

Practice in expository and argumentative writing based on analytical reading and critical thinking. Topics include methods of invention, organization and development, principles of basic research, and the elements of style.

Specific Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • Read with reasonable comprehension and analyze assigned essays;
  • Select a topic and apply principles to limit the topic for writing expository and argumentative essays;
  • Formulate a thesis statement and evaluate its feasibility;
  • Identify and organize central and supporting ideas;
  • Express ideas in clear, effective sentences that demonstrate sensitivity to language and understanding of the conventions of standard written English;
  • Prewrite, draft, revise, and edit their own essays;
  • Select and research a manageable topic and produce a competently documented research essay.
