There is still room in my Health 100 Learning Community course linked with Math 50.
A learning community is a unique learning opportunity. In a learning community the same group of students take two classes together providing a great opportunity to build relationships among students. This group also has a dedicated tutor to provide additional support for success. In this learning community two transfer level courses, Health 100 and Math 50, will be taken by a cohort, a group, of students. Each course is graded separately.
Today in class I divided the 80 student class into groups to work collaboratively on a Google Drive Presentation about two videos they watched, The Science of Sex Appeal and Life’s Greatest Miracle. To create a class collaborative presentation follow these steps:
This is a fun way to get the entire class involved and move quickly between groups!
This Fall students can enroll in a very special Learning Community with Math 50 and Health 100!

Dr. John Medina wrote a great book about how the brain works. In his book Brain Rules, he covers 12 brain rules. Here are the brain rules as listed on the website http://www.brainrules.net/about-brain-rules
EXERCISE | Rule #1: Exercise boosts brain power.
SURVIVAL | Rule #2: The human brain evolved, too.
WIRING | Rule #3: Every brain is wired differently.
ATTENTION | Rule #4: We don’t pay attention to boring things.
SHORT-TERM MEMORY | Rule #5: Repeat to remember.
LONG-TERM MEMORY | Rule #6: Remember to repeat.
SLEEP | Rule #7: Sleep well, think well.
STRESS | Rule #8: Stressed brains don’t learn the same way.
SENSORY INTEGRATION | Rule #9: Stimulate more of the senses.
VISION | Rule #10: Vision trumps all other senses.
GENDER | Rule #11: Male and female brains are different.
EXPLORATION | Rule #12: We are powerful and natural explorers.

Ben & Jerry’s Will Stop Using Genetically-Modified Ingredients | Health on GOOD.
Not that Ben & Jerry’s is healthy for us without Genetically Modified ingredients (GMO’s), but it is definitely a step in the right direction! GMO’s were developed to make our life easier, I liken it to those quick fast-food restaurants. Both were developed to make life easier without thinking about the possible negative effects. No one thought that fast-food may potentially be linked to obesity, they just thought how awesome it was to be able to produce food very fast. With GMO’s science found a way to modify plants to withstand pesticides and thus they would survive while weeds died, great right!?!? Now we can produce a whole lot more food! But, at what cost to our health?
San Diego Unified School District Board of Education voted to implement “Meatless Mondays”! Good job SDUSD!!!!! I know it is important for people to have choice and to make their own decisions, but how can this possible hurt anyone? I hope it helps children start off their week with plenty of fruits and vegetables, natures pharmacy. This is one small step toward attacking the obesity epidemic in our country.
What are your thoughts? agree/disagree? why?
