Need to take Health 100 and Math 50?

There is still room in my Health 100 Learning Community course linked with Math 50.

A learning community is a unique learning opportunity.  In a learning community the same group of students take two classes together providing a great opportunity to build relationships among students. This group also has a dedicated tutor to provide additional support for success.  In this learning community two transfer level courses, Health 100 and Math 50, will be taken by a cohort, a group, of students. Each course is graded separately.

Foundation Skills LC 6 course information:

  • #34262,  Health 100  (Health Ed/Fitness Dynamics),  11-12:20,  TTh,  3 units, TLC-112, Professor Falcone
  • #31861,  Math 50  (Beginning Algebra), 1:30-3:20, TTh,  4 units,  E-6,  Professor Snow

Student In-Class Collaborative Google Drive Presentation

Today in class I divided the 80 student class into groups to work collaboratively on a Google Drive Presentation about two videos they watched, The Science of Sex Appeal and Life’s Greatest Miracle.  To create a class collaborative presentation follow these steps:

  • Create a Presentation in Google Drive
    • Go to drive.google.com
    • Create a Presentation
    • Click on the blue “share” button and set the presentation to share with “anyone with the link” and be sure to set it so that anyone with the link can edit (the default is that they can view, you must change it to edit).
    • Make a title slide and a slide for each group to use
      • Title slide
        • Put the title of the presentation
        • Include a tiny url to the document (this makes it easy for students to access it)
          • Go to http://tinyurl.com/
          • copy the url of the presentation and paste it into the tiny url box.  You can now just click create tiny url, or you can make a custom tiny url with your presentation title.
      • Group slides
        • Create a slide for each group.  You can number them or identify the slides by topics.  This makes it easy for each group to identify the slide they are editing.
  • Watch live as all groups work on one collaborative presentation!
    • You will be able to see the work they are all doing at the same time
  • Once the presentation is complete each group presents their slide.

This is a fun way to get the entire class involved and move quickly between groups!

Are there Brain Rules?

Dr. John Medina wrote a great book about how the brain works.  In his book Brain Rules, he covers 12 brain rules.  Here are the brain rules as listed on the website http://www.brainrules.net/about-brain-rules

Exercise EXERCISE | Rule #1: Exercise boosts brain power.
Evolution SURVIVAL | Rule #2: The human brain evolved, too.
wiring WIRING | Rule #3: Every brain is wired differently.
attention ATTENTION | Rule #4: We don’t pay attention to boring things.
shortterm SHORT-TERM MEMORY | Rule #5: Repeat to remember.
longterm LONG-TERM MEMORY | Rule #6: Remember to repeat.
sleep SLEEP | Rule #7: Sleep well, think well.
stress STRESS | Rule #8: Stressed brains don’t learn the same way.
multisensory SENSORY INTEGRATION | Rule #9: Stimulate more of the senses.
vision VISION | Rule #10: Vision trumps all other senses.
gender GENDER | Rule #11: Male and female brains are different.
exploration EXPLORATION | Rule #12: We are powerful and natural explorers.

Watch these movies = change your life!

My favorite Nutrition videos to increase your health are:

  • Forks Over Knives:Forks Over Knives examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting animal-based and processed foods. How is our typically American diet effecting our health? Are we suffering more from chronic diseases than every before?”
  • Food Inc:Food, Inc. lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing how our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. Food, Inc. reveals surprising and often shocking truths about what we eat, how it’s produced and who we have become as a nation.”
  • Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead:Overweight, loaded up on steroids and suffering from a debilitating autoimmune disease, Joe was at the end of his rope and the end of his hope. With doctors and conventional medicine unable to help, Joe traded in junk food and hit the road with a juicer and generator in tow, vowing only to drink fresh fruit and vegetable juice for 60 days. Across 3,000 miles Joe had one goal in mind: To get off his pills and achieve a balanced lifestyle”

Ben & Jerry’s no more GMO! awesome!

Ben & Jerry’s Will Stop Using Genetically-Modified Ingredients | Health on GOOD.

Not that Ben & Jerry’s is healthy for us without Genetically Modified ingredients (GMO’s), but it is definitely a step in the right direction!  GMO’s were developed to make our life easier, I liken it to those quick fast-food restaurants.  Both were developed to make life easier without thinking about the possible negative effects.  No one thought that fast-food may potentially be linked to obesity, they just thought how awesome it was to be able to produce food very fast.  With GMO’s science found a way to modify plants to withstand pesticides and thus they would survive while weeds died, great right!?!?  Now we can produce a whole lot more food!  But, at what cost to our health?

‘Meatless Mondays’

10News – SDUSD approves ‘Meatless Mondays’ by 4-1: Plan designed to curb childhood obesity – 10News.com – News.

San Diego Unified School District Board of Education voted to implement “Meatless Mondays”!  Good job SDUSD!!!!!  I know it is important for people to have choice and to make their own decisions, but how can this possible hurt anyone?  I hope it helps children start off their week with plenty of fruits and vegetables, natures pharmacy.  This is one small step toward attacking the obesity epidemic in our country.

What are your thoughts?  agree/disagree? why?
