English 260: Literature through Film

In this class, we’ll explore the myriad ways in which literary texts (specifically, the three major genres of the short story, drama, and novel) have been adapted into film.  We will study the conventions and characteristics of each type of literature, and analyze how these conventions get played out when the work of literature is translated into its filmic version.

It is important to realize that this won’t just be a course where we discuss “which we liked better – the film or the book”; instead, we will analyze both versions of each story in order to understand better how we as readers/viewers arrive at an interpretation of each kind of text.

Our course is also organized around some major themes in literary and film studies. Some of the texts I usually cover in this class include The Bloody Chamber, The Maltese FalconThe Remains of the Day, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Frankenstein, and Much Ado about Nothing.
