Palomar College Learning For Success

Accelerated Mathematics Programs

Throughout the state, accelerated math programs have demonstrated higher success rates than traditional math sequences. They require more short-term commitment from students in return for the long-term gain of faster and more assured success in their mathematics requirements. All of the following programs employ an inquiry-based approach, group work, and hand-on activities in the classroom many with embedded tutors.

What is AMG?  (Accelerated Math Gateway)

AMG is a two-semester learning community which meets 6 hours per week each semester.  AMG provides a combination of lecture sessions with your instructor, hands-on learning activities with your peers in groups, tutoring support and ample opportunities for exploring and discovering ideas inside and outside of class. The first semester (AMG 1) is a 6 unit learning community and the second semester (AMG 2) is 4 units. This is an accelerated, enriched, single-year path to calculus that is an alternative to the traditional three-semester Math 60/115/135 sequence. Successful participants will be ready for Calculus I (Math 140) upon completion of both AMG 1 and AMG 2.  Here are some Frequently Asked Questions and a Promotional Video about AMG.
