Palomar College Learning For Success

Accelerated Mathematics Programs

Throughout the state, corequisite and accelerated math programs have demonstrated higher success rates than traditional math sequences. They require more short-term commitment from students in return for the significant gain of faster and more assured success in their mathematics courses. The corequisite courses pair a (usually) transfer-level math class with a support class.  The corequisite class model has been shown to greatly increase student success in transfer-level math classesThe accelerated math classes (Math 126 and Math 127) employ an inquiry-based approach, group work, and hand-on activities in the classroom, often with embedded tutors available to help students advanced to calculus.

STEM Precalculus (Math 126 and Math 127) is a two-semester preparation for Calculus that provides a combination of lecture sessions with your instructor, hands-on learning activities with your peers in groups, tutoring support and ample opportunities for exploring and discovering ideas inside and outside of class. This is an accelerated, enriched, single-year path to calculus that is an alternative to the traditional three-semester Math 60/115/135 sequence. It is designed to provide you with deeper learning and problem-solving experiences to prepare you to succeed in Calculus. Students will be ready for Business Calculus (Math 130) upon successful completion of STEM Precalculus I (Math 126), and ready for Calculus I (Math 140) upon successful completion STEM Precalculus II (Math 127).
