Material presented in the lab manual is divided into two main sections: Laboratory Investigations and Field Investigations. Laboratory investigations refer to those concepts explored in a classroom setting with the use of marine charts, sediment and water samples, and online resources. Field investigations provide students the opportunity to explore oceanographic concepts in the coastal settings of San Diego County and adjacent Orange County.
It is important for you to familiarize yourself with your lab syllabus and your lab manual. The order of lab activities will vary from semester to semester and from section to section due to scheduling of field trips for optimum tidal conditions. Your lab syllabus will provide you with information on lab activities scheduled for each week. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure that any pre-lab activities are completed prior to their class meeting. The web links provided under the headings “Laboratory Investigations” and “Field Investigations” will help you access required materials for each of the assigned lab activities.
Students will use some of these links during lab time. Other links will be used to complete an exercise prior to an in-class lab or field trip or as a follow-up to a lab activity.
Students should consult their lab manual and class syllabus for information about using these links.
