The Palomar College Chamber Singers and Palomar Chorale invite you to join us for the release of two virtual choir performances, with introductions by Palomar’s Director of Choral and Vocal Studies, John K. Russell. Dr. Russell will talk about the process of creating choral music in the virtual environment, how the choirs at Palomar are adapting to singing remotely, and speak about each of the works chosen for this performance.  The two compositions, recorded by the Chamber Singers for this concert are Madelena Casulana’s beautiful Madrigal Morir non può il mio cuore (My heart cannot die) and Carlos Simon’s setting of Sanctus.

John K. Russell – Concert Hour

John K. Russell, DMA is the Director of Choral and Vocal Studies at Palomar College and the Music Director of the San Diego Master Chorale. As Music Director of the SD Master Chorale, Dr. Russell conducts and coordinates all artistic activities of the chorale, which include preparing the chorus for performances with San Diego Symphony and other San Diego orchestras including the Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra and La Jolla Symphony. At Palomar College, he conducts the Chamber Singers and the Palomar Chorale, teaches applied voice and oversees the vocal music program. In addition, he recently served on the summer conducting faculty at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey where he taught master classes in conducting for the annual Westminster Summer Choral Festival. In May 2021, he is scheduled to make his Carnegie Hall conducting debut performing Shawn Kirchner’s Songs of Ascent with the Manhattan Concert Production Masterworks Chorus and Orchestra.

The Nathan Hubbard Trio – Concert Hour

The Nathan Hubbard Trio features guitarist Grant Fisher and bassist Harley Magsino, playing music covering Hubbard hummable catchy originals, great American songbook classics, and jazz re-working of modern pop tunes. The trio performs regularly at local venues like Panama 66, Seven Grand, Dizzys San Diego, and the Handlery Hotel, as well as events ranging from Summer Fun On The 101 to the Rueben H Fleet Center gala. Andrew Steinberg – Concert Hour

Saxophonist and conductor Andrew R. Steinberg has been recognized for his “beautiful tone” as well as his “astute and refined leadership” throughout North America, Asia, and Europe. As an Aaron Copland Fund for Music grantee, Dr. Steinberg has commissioned over a dozen works for saxophone and has premiered countless more for the instrument.

Peter Gach – Concert Hour

Peter Gach is a pianist of wide-ranging musical interests.  His repertoire extends from the complete Well-Tempered Clavier, Vol. II of JS Bach, to contemporary works written especially for him. He has premiered works by SoCal composers Benjamin Krause, Norm Weston, William C.
