Upward Bound is a year-round comprehensive academic college preparation and retention program that serves students from North County High Schools. UB provides academic instruction and support, and promotes academic excellence to high-potential college bound students preparing to attend and graduate from a four year university upon high school graduation.

UB is a federally-funded TRIO program through the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, DC. The program originated nationally in 1964 to assist underrepresented students achieve their postsecondary education goals. There are over 48,000 Upward Bound students served each year, from over 700 UB programs nationally in the United States.

Upward Bound Offers:

Academic Year Component

During the Academic Year Component (AYC), Upward Bound offers the following services:

  • Academic Advising
  • College Prep Guidance
  • Assistance in College Admissions Forms
  • After School Tutoring at our UB Tutoring Center
  • SAT/PSAT/ACT Test Preparation Classes
  • Financial Aid, College and Career Student Workshops
  • Parent College Prep Workshops
  • College Visits/ College Fairs
  • Educational Field Trips
  • College Saturdays
  • Bus Transportation for Selected Events


Summer Residential Component

The Summer Residential Component simulates a college going experience and is designed to provide students with the opportunity to enrich their academic skills in a college setting.

During the Summer Residential Component (SRC), Upward Bound offers the following services:

  • Dorm as a University to obtain the College Life Experience
  • College Prep Courses
  • Academic Enrichment
  • Cultural Activities
  • College Visits and Field Trips
  • Career and Academic Advising
  • Leadership and Team Building Skills Development
  • Study Habits Necessary for College
