FREN 101 French I (5 units)
This course is the first semester of French. This elementary level course is a study of the French language and
French-speaking cultures, with emphasis on the development of communicative skills and basic structures.
Course combines in-class instruction and practice with self-paced study in the Language Laboratory. This
beginning-level course is for students with no previous coursework in French. Zero cost textbook course!

FREN 102 French II (5 units)
This course is the second semester of French. This elementary level course is a study of the French language
and French-speaking cultures, with continued emphasis on the development of communicative skills and basic
structures. Course combines in-class instruction with self-paced study in the Foreign Language Laboratory. Zero cost textbook course!

FREN 201 French III (5 units)
This course is the third semester of French. This intermediate level course is a study of the French language and
French-speaking cultures, focusing on intermediate level structures and readings of culturally relevant authentic
materials. Emphasis is on developing oral, listening, reading and writing skills in order to acquire proficiency in
French. Course combines in-class instruction with self-paced study in the World Languages Laboratory. Class is
largely conducted in French.
FREN 202 French IV (5 units)
This course is the fourth semester of French. This intermediate level course is a study of the French language and of
special topics on the culture of the French-speaking world. Emphasis is on further development of oral, listening,
reading and writing skills in order to improve communicative competence in French. Class is largely conducted in French.

FREN 140 Basic French Pronunciation (1 unit)
Practice in the basics of French pronunciation. Emphasis on the correct use of intonation, stress, and rhythm.
FREN 215 Advanced French (3 units)
Discuss literature, cinema and other cultural topics in French.

Associate in Arts (AA) DEGREE and CERTIFICATE Program in French:
An AA in French is a 60 unit degree offered by the college. You will major in French but you still have to complete the other 40 GE unit requirements. Learn more about the AA in French.
The Certificate of Achievement in French is a 20 unit certificate that requires only the completion of the four French courses (or accepted substitutions).

Zero cost textbooks for French.
French will soon be a zero cost textbook program! That means that all course materials will be provided for free for French 101, 102 and 201. In Fall 2020, FREN 101, will start using a zero-cost textbook, followed by a zero-cost texbook for FREN 102 in Spring 2021. The textbook for FREN 201 is in progress.
