Nina Simone on the Duty of an Artist

An artist’s duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times. I think that is true of painters, sculptors, poets, musicians. . . I CHOOSE to reflect the times and situations in which I find myself. That, to me, is my duty. And at this crucial time in our lives, when everything is so desperate, when every day is a matter of survival, I don’t think you can help but be involved. . . We will shape and mold this country or it will not be molded and shaped at all anymore. So I don’t think you have a choice. How can you be an artist and NOT reflect the times? That to me is the definition of an artist.

Palomar Coffee Talks
We are about to launch into a new season and are already generating excitement and conversation around our focus this year- Works By Women. For too long women, and other folks that do not identify as “male”, have been excluded from the canons of art & literature, diminished in the halls of academia and obstructed from the seats of power. The current resurgence of hyper-masculinity in our politics and culture is being answered by a rising tide of intersectional women’s empowerment. We aim to reflect and contribute to this significant development. We are planning a roundtable discussion for mid-September, "Why Women's Voices Now." The Boehm Art Gallery is opening with a show of all women artists, "That's What She Said." Our first theatre production of the season, "O Beautiful" by Theresa Rebeck will knock your socks off.
