Is Homosexuality a Lifestyle Choice?

Some people believe that discrimination against one’s sexual orientation is completely different from discrimination against race because people are born into their race, but homosexuals choose to be attracted to people of the same gender.  Those who discriminate against homosexuality claim that such relationship choices are not natural; while studies show that about 10% of the population of every sexually reproducing species in nature develops homosexual bonds. Also, many homosexual people have recalled being attracted to the same gender from as far back as they can remember.

What do you think? Is homosexuality a choice? If you do think it is a choice, do you think others should be able to justify discriminating against same gender relationships because it is a choice?

I”m astounded that these questions should even be raised in 2012. Study after study after study have shown that most gay people are born gay and that for the vast majority, it is NOT a choice. As to the last question raised above, one generally chooses one”s religion (or lack thereof), does one not? ONe can change one”s religion, right? Does that then give a CAtholic the right to discriminate against a Jew? or an atheist to discriminate against a Muslim? No. There is NO justification for discriminating against LGBTQ folks – none whatsoever.

Can you share any of these studies? What about bisexuals; if it is not a conscious choice for them, what does decide their changing preferences?

Bisexuals are people who have the potential to be romantically and/or sexually attracted to people of any gender. Although I could be wrong on this point, since I myself am not bisexual, I believe they would not describe themselves as “changing preferences.” It is simply a case of falling in love with a PERSON, regardless of their gender.

Reminds me of what some comedian said once . . . something along the lines of . . .
Someone says, “The Bible says that homosexuality is not natural.”
Comedian: “And a talking snake is?”

Untrue.. Studies have shown the contrary… For example …genetically identical twins..large studies across the globe show that if one twin is gay only 11 percent of other identical twins are also gay. ..surely this would not be the case if it was a genetic predisposition ?

I could not agree with Queer At heart more! I was amazed, surprised, and shocked at the questions asked, especially “…other should be able to justify discrimination against other gender relationships…” Read on: Is Heterosexuality a LIfestyle Choice? It is important for homosexuality to be seen as a choice because before something can be seen as wrong, it first has to be seen as chosen. To see this for the delusion that it is infringes on people’s ability to see others as evil, immoral, etc. In order to see themselves as good, moral, etc.

I just took a look at the performinghearts blog – very nicely done Michael.

I am enclosing a URL to a You Tube video that you probably have seen; I show it to my psychology students. I think it does a good job of capturing the orientation vs. preference issue. It might be a good one to include in the blog. (?)

HAHAHAHH thank you for the comedian quote. Sometimes the issue of choice or not choice gets so heavy. I relate it to one not talking abut religion or politics. Regardless of the many studies…. Studies can be biased to any one or the other .. SO…. I agree it”s about the relationship with a PERSON… My own family seems to have opinions on both sides. I personally don”t stand for one way or the other.. I think it can be both. Some people may in fact be born sexually perferring the same sex and others through for what ever reason… Read more »

Regardless of gender, choosing to be a homosexual should be a personal choice. There will always be someone saying that being a homosexual is wrong, but, in the end, it does not matter what other people think or say. As long as a person knows what is right for him or her. Stranger’s opinions really don’t count, it is the support system that a person creates that is important. Everyone has the right to be happy.

However, homosexuality, in its truest definition, is no more a behavior than is heterosexuality. While one may indeed choose to express their sexuality through behavior, said expression is actually not what defines ones sexuality. Moreover, it is the inward desire, or fundamental orientation itself. And said orientation is not chosen. However it is important for many to frame human sexuality in such an oversimplified context in order to not only create and nurture their own self validating delusion of heterosexuality possessing moral superiority and by its extension, human validity ( said validity not being related to procreation) but to inadvertently… Read more »

If you are either straight or gay you know from a very young age what gender you prefer. Those who state it is a choice are acting very ignorant because I”m sure they can retell their first crush on someone at a very young age. So why are they setting up different rules for people with different sexual preferences (homosexual relationships) than what is considered the norm.

Homosexuality is pressed upon an individual from the point of molestation which often occurs as early as infancy. The brain becomes hardwired to this sex act and attempts to recreate it through subsequent homosexual activity.

While there may be “natural” homosexual curiosity that occurs in animal species, it is not by nature sustainable simply for the fact that it would doom any species that reproduces via egg and sperm.

I believe that some people are born gay and others can become gay due to a molestation. The person has suffered a trauma and should receive therapy. Over time this individual may eventually become a heterosexual or maybe not. This is a very complex issue

From a purely health angle, the homosexual lifestyle is unhealthy physically, psychologically and emotionally ..with the likelihood of death roughly 15 years before the general population..if in doubt check Goggle ..

The description of homosexuality as a lifestyle is an indoctrinalized subversive control tactic subconciously and subversively Implemented by the powerful in order to manipulativly condition societal ideology with a subjectively comparative sense of moral superiority and by its extension, human validity through connotative oversimplification of complex reality through its delusional inherent framing context of choice.

You can choose the behavior, but the fundamental orientation which ultimately defines ones sexuality is not chosen. However, before something can be seen as being wrong it first has to be seen as chosen, lest peoples ability to see others as evil in order to see themselves as good is infringed upon.

The one aspect that noone is mentioning here is why is it important that homosexuality be seen as a choice? Because, before something can be seen as wrong it must first be seen as being chosen, and therefore worthy of contempt and hatred. And if to be homosexual is to be immoral, and I am heterosexual then I am good and moral. And if I am good and moral, does it not then become subconciously justifiable for me to hate, abuse and destroy that which is evil and immoral? The bottom line is that it is largely about creating a… Read more »
