Norton Introduction to Literature by Bain, et al.

a novel to be determined

COURSE OBJECTIVES

English 203 is a transferable composition course designed to help the student to think critically and demonstrate awareness of the cultural, gender, and generational assumptions which might affect the communication of meaning, to write effectively about literature, and to appreciate and understand various kinds of literature including short stories, poetry, drama, novels, and film and also to differentiate between the different critical approaches to literature. The student will practice writing about literature, including a longer term paper on Hamlet. Though we will be reading many important works, the course is not limited to the syllabus and the techniques discussed in class should be applicable for any work of literature or film.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Three papers, at least 4 pages in length each, one creative project, and one term paper which is 15-18 pages with appropriate critical references are required. In addition there will be one midterm and one final exam to cover all the material read in class. A creative project may be done on any of the 4 units, but clear the project ahead of time. This may include original poetry, short stories, or a one-act play; analysis of popular song lyrics; a group presentation of a scene from a play; art work tied to the novel or any other work of literature; or any other creative project. To help the student understand the works better and to help her prepare for the exams, a journal or workbook is recommended, but not required.

The final grade will be averaged based on the following:

30 %--3 essay

10 %--creative project

20 %--term paper

10 %--midterm

20 %--final exam

10 %--subjective grade

100 %--TOTAL

The subjective grade is figured on a point basis with points given for class participation groups, 10 minute writes, journal entries, and points can be deducted for excessive absenses or tardies. The optional workbook will be given 25 points as part of the subjective grade.

POLICIES

Late paper will be graded down one whole grade. The term paper earns two grades, both of which will be lowered if it is turned in late. There will be no rewrites; however, if a paper is finished early, I will be glad to look it over and make suggestions before the due date. Plagiarism is a serious offence; any student found cheating in this way will automatically receive an "F."
