Chumash Pictographs

This is state park established to preserve the painted caverns which were created by shamans and seekers who desired to express visions seen while enduring the deprivations of the vision quest.
Due to vandals using the images painted there for shotgun and rifle target practice the parks have been forced to limit access to the site.
Click on the small picture to see an enlarged view of vandalism as well as some of the finer details of the paintings,  Use your browsers back button to return to this page.

The picture to the left is a section of the huge murals painted on the walls and ceiling of this cavern deep in the Ventura Mountains.

The openings of many of the sacred places where archaic Native Californians were often hidden or tiny, giving little clue to their presence from the outside.
