At the time of her first menstruation, a Mountain Cahuilla girl was treated while lying on a bed of fragrant boughs built in a clean but still warm pit oven constructed just for that purpose.  Lying on the bed, they were covered to their necks in warm clean sand and remained there, cared for by their elder female relatives for a day and night.  She was given a warm, strong, black herbal drink during that time and like most Indian women experienced no menstrual discomfort during her reproductive years,
