Luiseño Sandpaintings

Luiseño sandpaintings were used to predict the outcomes of rites of passage.  The two sandpaintings on the left with dark backgrounds are for boys, the painting on the right with a pale background is for a girl.  Unlike the paintings of the Déne which are made primarily from ground minerals, the sandpaintings of the Luiseño were created with plant materials, mostly seeds.  The boy's painting in the lower left is surrounded by offerings of cloth and money from relatives and friends.
