These tribal territories are those generally agreed upon by scholars and notice that the map is from the State of California.  There are many other views and the matter is far from settled.

The most reluctantly accepted idea comes from John Jeffredo, an artist enrolled at Pechanga, who believes a seafaring people, whom  he calls the Island Shoshoni, once occupied the offshore islands that this map indicates were controlled by the Gabrieleņo.

Dr. Eric Elliot believes he has linguistic evidence to show that the Luiseņo were probably the original inhabitants of those islands.

Katherine Saubel believes that originally the eastern limit of Cahuilla territory was the Colorado River.

Carmen Lucas was taught that her people were a distinct group not called Tipai as the location of her ancestral territories would indicate when correlated with this map.  Many other people probably have ideas about original territories which contradict this map, too.
