Tules for everything!!

Tules are sometimes called cattails and have flower stalks which look like hotdogs on  sticks.  Their leaves, when seen in cross section, are full of small air pockets which make them good insulators against cold and heat; it also makes them buoyant enough to float, and cushy to sit, lie, or stand upon.

Tules were used for everything including food.  The root is crispy and sweet and refreshing and the pollen, borne in abundance, is a source of nearly pure dietary protein.

Make sure to take a look at the dug out canoe.
