Daily Assignment

Monday, April 6

We will not meet in class today.  Instead, log on to Blackboard, and discuss chapter 1 of Lewis in the online Discussion Board.

This is week 11 of the semester.  I should have received your weekly e-mail update for week 10 by today.

Before the end of the day today, log on to the Blackboard Discussion Board:

Go to the forum for Lewis 1 and respond to the prompt.  Read every other posting, and respond to those that you have questions about or comments on.  Return to the Discussion Board tomorrow and read all the postings.  If you have questions about the reading, raise them on the Discussion Board.  Remember to focus your attention and discussion on the ideas in the reading assignemnt.

Complete the following reading by Wednesday:

1.  Lewis 2 and 3.

2.  Find and read two outside articles that might be relevant to your next essay.

Complete the following writing by Wednesday (and bring it to class):

1.  Two copies of a reflection paper on Lewis 2 and 3 and appendix, "Illustrations of the Tao."

Lewis suggests that the conquest of Nature by science is in fact the conquest of us by Nature. The only escape from becoming slaves to the powerful and the technicians, he says, is the system of natural law that he calls the Tao. Much has changed since he wrote some 60 years ago. Today we see the conquest of Nature in the form of bioengineering as a mainly positive thing, though some are concerned about it. Does genetic engineering threaten the kind of abolition of man he warns of? Or have we found a way around that? Why or why not? Be specific. Give page numbers for references to the book. (By the way, Tao is pronounced dow.)

2.  A trial thesis statement and summary of what you hope to say in your third essay.  The subject area for essay 3, you will remember, is Morality: Right and Wrong.

3.  A correct list of works cited entry and summary for each of the outside articles.  Bring copies of the articles and your summaries to class with you.

Reminder.  You should have completed the following reading by today:
