Daily Assignment

Wednesday, February 11

We will not have a regular class meeting today.  You will meet in your editorial groups by arrangement, at a time and place of your choosing.

Bring with you to your group meeting today:

reflection paper  on Light 7, 8, 9, & Appendix.  Discuss what you think are the most important ideas in the book (not just these last three chapters, but the entire book) and explain why they are important.  Light discusses ways in which students, teachers or advisers, and the college as a whole could improve the learning experience for students.  Identify what you think are the most promising ideas under each of these headings, and explain why they are promising.  The ideas you identify need not come from the book, but they may.  Give examples from your own experience or observations to support your claims.  Feel free to disagree with the author and to modify the suggestions he makes, but give your reasons when you do.  Whenever you refer to the text, give the page number in parentheses, whether you quote it directly or not.  Bring one copy of your reflection paper to your group meeting, and send a copy to me by e-mail.

2.  The Light book.

3.  Print out and bring with you to your group meeting a copy of the instructions for your meeting.  Follow these instructions.

Note: Next Monday is a holiday (Washington's Day) and we will not have a class meeting.  We will meet next Wednesday.

Complete the following reading by Wednesday:

1.  DIH 1.4: The Thesis Statement.  Read this as you are working on your own thesis statements.  I have posted some examples of short reviews of trial thesis statements you might want to look at.  The examples are theses written in another class.  They are intended to demonstrate what kinds of things to look for.

2.  DIH 1.5: Writing a First Draft.

3.   Research Tools.

4.  You might find it useful to look at some of the Internet sites on Learning.  These will be much more helpful if you already have some idea what sort of things you are looking for.

5.  Two periodical articles that might be relevant to a topic you are considering writing your first essay on, from the on-line periodical databases available through our library.  Note: The assignment is NOT to bring in articles or Web pages from the Internet; it is to use the on-line periodical databases, like Ebscohost, and find at least two periodical (magazine, newspaper, or journal) articles.

Complete the following writing by next Wednesday ( email me a copy of your thesis by Tuesday and bring to class on Wednesday):

1.  At least one trial thesis statement and a paragraph describing what you would like to say in an essay to develop that thesis.  Send me a copy by e-mail no later than Tuesday, and bring a copy with you to class.  If you are undecided about your topic you may bring up to three trial thesis statements.

2.  Reflection papers on the two periodical articles you have read. These may be summaries of the articles, but you may also comment on them.

Reminder.  You should have completed the following reading by today:

Light 7, 8, 9, & Appendix.
