Daily Assignment

Wednesday, February 18

We will meet in room LL-104 (the computer classroom on the bottom floor of the Library) at 1:00 p.m.

This is week 5 of the semester.  I should have received your weekly e-mail update for week 4 by today.

Bring with you to class today:

1.  At least one trial thesis statement and a paragraph describing what you would like to say in an essay to develop that thesis.  If you are undecided about your topic you may bring up to three trial thesis statements.  You should have sent me a copy of your thesis by e-mail no later than yesterday.

2.  Reflection papers on the two periodical articles you have read.

3.  A printed copy of DIH 1.4: The Thesis Statement.

4.  Your print handbook (K&M).

Complete the following reading by Monday:

Read K&M 30, 31, 32, and 33 and skim K&M 34.  This is the section on how to cite published sources according to MLA format.  We will use MLA format for all of our essays.  So please start getting to know this section, which we will be using all semester.  We will use the format for parenthetical citations in 34a(1)  and the format for lists of works cited in 34a(2).  Make sure that when you look up how to do your citations or list of works cited entries you are in chapter 34, not 35.  Those sections look similar but in fact concern different formats, so if you follow them you will get it wrong.

These chapters are basically long lists of examples of how you would do citations and works cited entries for different kinds of works.  You can't really read most of it because most of it isn't paragraphs.  You can and should use it as a reference.  We will discuss how to do this in class.  If you have questions, please ask them.  However, even if you are unsure of the format at the beginning, provide citations for all information you get from sources.  Do not plan on putting them in later.  Put at least a parenthesis and the author's name even in the first drafts of your paper.  It is very easy to forget them in later revisions.  The same, I hope it is clear by now, goes double for quotation marks.

Complete the following writing by Monday ( and bring to class):

Your first working draft of essay 1.

Bring two (2) paper copies to class and upload your essay to the Pluto server by ftp before class. See the FTP Instructions for how to do this.  Review the format and requirements for working drafts  if you need to.

Reminder.  You should have completed the following reading by today:

1.  DIH 1.4: The Thesis Statement.  Read this as you are working on your own thesis statements.  I have posted some examples of short reviews of trial thesis statements you might want to look at.  The examples are theses written in another class.  They are intended to demonstrate what kinds of things to look for.

2.  DIH 1.5: Writing a First Draft.

3.   Research Tools.

4.  You might find it useful to look at some of the Internet sites on Learning.  These will be much more helpful if you already have some idea what sort of things you are looking for.

5.  Two periodical articles that might be relevant to a topic you are considering writing your first essay on, from the on-line periodical databases available through our library.

You should have completed the following writing by today:

1.  At least one trial thesis statement and a paragraph describing what you would like to say in an essay to develop that thesis.

2.  Reflection papers on the two periodical articles you have read.
