Logging on to Your Web Site by FTP in Firefox 2

The following instructions do not apply if your browser in Internet Explorer 5 or 6, Firefox 1, Netscape, or any other browser.  They will work only with Firefox version 2.  If you are unsure what version you have, open your browser, click on Help, on the right end of menu bar at the top of the browser, and click on About Mozilla Firefox, at the bottom of the drop-down menu.  A box will open that tells you the version number.  If it begins with a 2, you are in the right place.  If you have Firefox version 1, upgrade to version 2 so that you can use the FTP Add-on

Downloading Fireftp.  In order to do ftp with Firefox 2, you need to download an add-on called FireFTP.  Go to the Firefox Add-ons page: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/.  In the Search line at the top type FireFTP and you will go to the download page.  Download the add-on to your computer.  If you plan to do ftp from more than one computer, download this add-on to each computer you plan to use.

Logging on to Pluto by ftp. You will upload your work to the Pluto server using a program called file transfer protocol or ftp.  This is a simple process that you can do in your browser.

1. Open Firefox 2.

2. In the Address line type the following or just click this link.  (Note: If you get a page that says This Page Cannot Be Displayed when you click the link, try typing the address into the address line.  Sometimes that works better. Note that this address begins with "ftp," not "http."):

ftp://pluto.palomar.edu

3. This should give you a Log On As box that asks you for a username and password.

Your username is "student\" followed by your nine-digit Palomar student ID number.

Your password is the same one you use for e-Services and Blackboard.

4. Once logged on to the Pluto server you should be taken to a page that is titled “Index of ftp://pluto.palomar.edu/” and contains all of the files you have uploaded. From here, Right click anywhere on the page and select: “view this page in Fireftp”

You will be taken to the Fireftp program in the Firefox browser. When the page loads it will prompt you for a user name and password.

Your username is the same as before (student\*your Palomar ID number*) and your password is the same one you use for Eservices/ blackboard.

5. Your Pluto server space will now be loaded into Fireftp and is ready to upload files.

To upload files, simply open the directory that contains your file on the left side of the window and select the file you want to upload. Then, click the green arrow pointing to the right window.

Your file will then be uploaded to the Pluto server and should appear on the right side of the window.

Return to FTP Instuctions.
