Daily Assignment

Monday, March 16

We will meet in room MB-11  at 1:00 p.m.

This is week 9 of the semester.  I should have received your weekly e-mail update for week 8 by today.

Bring with you to class today:

Two copies of a reflection paper on Mc Henry: Chapters 5 and 6

McHenry discusses the matter of authority. We need to rely on the word of others, frequently others who we don't know personally, for much of our everyday information. What authorities do you trust most? Why? Based on McHenry's discussion of authority, are there some authorities more worthy of trust than others? How can we tell which authority to trust?  Be specific enough that we could actually apply your suggestions.

In chapter 6.3, McHenry says "I'm apt to consider it true because I know it, even though logically it ought to work the other way round." Is this true of you? Why or why not? Either way, how do you know? That is, how can you tell whether you are seeing what you want to see, knowing what you want to know, or seeing and knowing what's really there?

By the end of the day on Tuesday: go to this Web page and review the Web sites listed.  Evaluate them for authority, bias, and information value: Web pages.  Log on to your Group page in Blackboard and evaluate the Web sites for their credibility.  Respond to and discuss your evaluations with the other members of your group.

Complete the following reading by Wednesday:

1.  Mc Henry: Chapter 7.

2.  Read, and bring with you to class on Wednesday, a print copy of a source (a periodical article, book chapter, or Internet source) that you might use for your next essay.  You don't have to write anything about the source, but you should have read it and be prepared to explain it when you come to class.

Complete the following writing by Wednesday (and bring it to class):

1.  Two copies of a reflection paper on Mc Henry: Chapter 7.  Feel free to comment on any of the ideas in the reading, but also consider the following issue:

Do you think that the three (or four) C's that McHenry suggests are sufficient advice to guide us in avoiding being misled and misleading one another? Why or why not? Do you implement them in your own writing and speaking and deciding? Which of these three modes (knowing courageously, carefully, and conditionally) do you think you practice most often? Which least? On the basis of your observation of other students in your classes, which do you think they most often need to be reminded of? Why?

2.  Bring with you a print copy of a source that you might use for your next essay.  You don't have to write anything about the source, but you should have read it and be prepared to explain it when you come to your group meeting.
