Opiate Romance

C.M. Fortson

Automated memory
Driven by nerves
Taken out one by one
Infectious thread

Snorting pixie dust
Swinging sweet euphoria
Thoroughly selective
Flakes into custody

Neurotic promise
A better tomorrow
Carving headstone
Candy-coated day awaits

A bitter fling with glory
Shooting the needle
Picking at the bone
Hanging on a street corner

Pockets run dry
Such a sardonic story
Loosening reality
A Hooker girl gets in car

These were echoes after 1979
Never stopping
Just one fix
Parents betrayal of love forever

Connection with gold
A romance for the ages
Orlando and Rosalind
With drugs and sex

Down into the ground
Pounded in years
Never again to see the light
Buried in her grave at night

Just for one fix
It ended up like this
Murdered with no mercy
Thrown in a cold pit

Her body is deteriorating
In a cold unmarked hole
An end to a doomed journey
Of a six year opiate romance
